The GX-630D-SS (along with the GX-270D-SS) were the last of Akai’s Surround Sound series.
Both these models featured the Quadra Sync feature which meant that they could be used as a mini home-studio, much like the Teac A3440S. In ‘Quadra Sync’ mode, the pre-recorded tracks could be monitored via the record head, avoiding the time delay normally associated with the playback head and thus giving ‘Sync’ for the subsequent recorded parts. The recorder could be used in either 4-channel surround sound or stereo modes.
A three motor drive system was employed, with Akai’s new CPG (Centre Pole Frequency Generated) AC servo motor for direct capstan drive and two eddy current outer rotor motors for the reels. A pitch control function gave a 5% playing speed modulation. Other features included four microphone inputs, two headphone outputs and a 10½ ‘” reel capacity.
